Creation of an Archive, Documentation Center, Library and Interpretation Center on Che

The project that was initiated by ASF International in Misiones, Argentina, in January 2004, is the result of initial contacts made last October by members of ASF. The objective is to collaborate in the creation of an Archive, Documentation Center, Library and Interpretation Center specialized in the childhood and life of Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known as Che, who began to take his first steps in the Municipality of Caraguatay, in the province of Misiones in Argentina.

During the month of January 2004, three members of ASF Internacional moved to the Misiones area and maintained the first contacts with the City Council of Caraguatay and presented the pre-project of the actions to be carried out, which was very well received by the City Council. They also contacted ASF Argentina section, and associate José Antonio García Aquino joined the team.

It began with a careful historical investigation of the “Solar del Che”, which was owned by the Guevara family and which at the moment part of the plot is owned by the Province of Misiones. The search for oral sources in the province of Misiones was also initiated. The sources located so far are people who have been directly or indirectly in contact with the Guevara family or who knew the property where this family lived in the late 1920s and which continued to be owned by the Guevaras until the middle of the 20th century. The great interest that the project aroused in the inhabitants of the area produced a chain of events that allowed easy contact with many of the people who can contribute their grain of sand to oral history.

ASF Argentina section is continuing research in the area’s archives to be able to complete the historical research on the “Solar del Che” and be able to begin developing the project and sign a collaboration agreement with the City Council of Caraguatay.
